Portable generators compared
We track 12 portable generators, from 1,800 W to 10,500 W running. 5 have a 240 V outlet (needed for well pumps and other 240 V loads) and 10 have automatic carbon-monoxide shut-off. Unlike a power station, a generator runs as long as it has fuel, but it must stay outdoors, away from the house.

Runtime and load are the manufacturer's own figures. Gallons a day = tank ÷ runtime × 24 at that load. Fuel cost per kWh = gallons ÷ (runtime × running watts × load) × $4.33/gal, the EIA US average for regular gasoline.
